Abortion and Transformation: Polarization of the Debate
In the narrative of Polish transformation from state socialism to liberal democracy, the abortion debate of the 1990s represented a force that set the standards and limits of democracy and human rights discourse used in public space for the years to come. Many argued that the expansion of the Catholic Church into the public sphere, in this predominantly Catholic society, was responsible for the passivity of women in the area of reproductive rights. Contradicting this idea of the passive woman is the fact that at the same time, Poland experienced a massive mobilization of women around abortion issues. One of the leaders of a reproductive rights organization recalled:
